UK Advances Digital Gilt (DIGIT) Pilot with On-Chain Settlement Focus
The UK government has progressed its Digital Gilt Instrument (DIGIT) pilot following the closure of its Preliminary Market Engagement Notice (PMEN) in April 2025. The initiative aims to explore distributed ledger technology (DLT) applications across the sovereign debt issuance lifecycle and accelerate DLT adoption in UK financial markets.
Key design features include a digitally native, short-dated instrument issued within the Digital Securities Sandbox (DSS), operating separately from conventional debt programs. The government now prioritizes on-chain settlement solutions to test end-to-end issuance processes, signaling a concrete step toward blockchain integration in sovereign debt markets.
